 # Electric Charge On A Quark All Quarks carry some “Electric Charge” with them. The Electric Charge on a Quark are fractional. The values of Electric Charge of a Quark is either “− 1/3 e or + 2/3 e Times Of The Total Charge Or Elementary Charge”.

The Up-Type Quark, Which constitute of Up Quark, Charmed Quark & Top Quark carry +2/3 e charge on them. On the other hand the Down-Type Quark, Which constitute of Down Quark, Strange Quark & Bottom Quark carry −1/3 e charge on them.

Antiquarks have just the opposite charges, The Up-Type Antiquarks will have −2/3 e Charge on them. The Down-Type Antiquarks will have +1/3 e Charge on them.

## Mathematical Analysis :

Let us do some practical calculations of Electric Charge Of Quark.

Consider a Hadron, Which is combining to form an Atomic Nuclei. The Atomic Nuclei consist of Neutrons & Protons.

### Charge On Neutrons As we know Neutron consist of Two Down Quarks & One Up Quark.

Now we know that the Down Quark Carry – 1/3 e on them. There are Two Down Quarks. Thus, Adding up the value of Down Quarks we get,

Total Down Quark Charge

= −1/3e + (−1/3e)

= −1 + (−1)/3e

Total Down Quark Charge

= − 2/3e……………(Eq1)

Neutron also contain One Up Quark, Now we know that Up Quark Carry +2/3e Charge on them.

Total Up Quark Charge

= +2/3e………………(Eq2)

Adding up the above equations (Eq1 + Eq2),

Total Charge On Neutron = Total Down Quark Charge + Total Up Quark Charge

= −2/3e         +          (+2/3e)

= −2/3e         +            2/3e

Total Charge On Neutron

= 0e ### Charge On Protons As we have studied earlier, That Proton consist of Two Up Quarks & One Down Quark

Now we know that the Up Quark Carry +2/3e Charge on them. There are Two Up Quarks in Proton. Thus, Adding up the value of Up Quarks we get,

Total Up Quark Charge

= +2/3e + (+2/3e)

= +2 + (+ 2)/3e

Total Up Quark Charge

Proton also contain One Down Quark, Now we know that the Down Quark Carry −1/3e Charge on them.

Total Down Quark Charge

= −1/3e……………………(Eq2)

Adding up the above equations (Eq1 + Eq2),

Total Charge On Proton = Total Down Quark Charge + Total Up Quark Charge

= −1/3e        +        (+4/3e)

= −1/3e        +          4/3e

= −1             +          4 / 3e

= +3/3e

Total Charge On Proton

= +1e

“Thus, From The Above Calculus We Get, The Total Charges On Neutron Is 0e & The Total Charges On Proton Is +1e”.

We can say that the Electric Charges On Hadron Is Sum Of The Electric Charges On Its Quarks, By which that Hadron is made up of. All the Hadrons like, Baryons ( Which consist of Three Quarks ), Anti-Baryons ( Which consist of Three Antiquarks ) or Mesons ( Which consist of One Quark & One Antiquark ) will always sum up to the value of Integer Charges.
